The 5 main skin types

Have you ever wondered what type of skin you have?

Identifying your skin type is the first step in following a healthy skincare routine. Everyone's skin is unique, but there are some common skin types that can help you identify where your skin fits the most. The five main types of skin are commonly known as normal, oily, dry, combination and Sensitive.

Here we take a look at each skin type and how to take care of it.

Normal Skin

Normal is a term broadly used to refer to well-balanced skin. Generally speaking, it could mean that the skin is healthy and well hydrated. It has a balanced sebum production and good blood circulation.

How to take care of it:

You don't have to work too hard to keep your skin smooth and happy, but that doesn't mean you can take a back seat when it comes to skincare.

  • Cleansing: Cleanse twice a day, in the morning and at night with your usual face wash.

  • Moisturizing: Moisturizers are a must for any skin type. They keep the skin moist and prevent excess sebum from being produced.

  • ExfoliationTry to use Exfoliation once a week.

Oily Skin

This type of skin occurs when the body produces excess sebum (oil), leaving the skin looking oily or excessively shiny. People with oily skin can also have pores that are too large that are highly visible.

How to take care of it:

  • Cleansing: Cleanse twice a day, in the morning and at night with an oil free face wash, especially after heavy sweating.

  • Moisturizing: Use an oil free moisturizer, try to also ensure your moisturizer includes SPF 25 or more.

  • ExfoliationTry to exfoliate no more than 2-3 times a week.

Dry Skin

Dry skin texture can be rough, flaky, and dry areas can create uneven skin tone because as compared to normal skin, it produces less sebum. Those with dry skin types generally have nearly invisible pores and may suffer from premature wrinkles and regular skin irritation.

How to take care of it:

  • Cleansing: Cleanse once a day, in the evening night consider a gentle cleanser with added moisturizers like ceramides, hyaluronic acid or glycerin. In the mornings using a face cloth with warm water is enough to ensure your skin is clean before adding moisturizers.

  • Moisturizing: Dry skin needs more moisture than any other skin type. So, have a good one that will keep your skin hydrated throughout the day with added SPF.

Exfoliation: Try to exfoliate no more than 1-2 times a week.

Combination Skin

This is the most common of the 5 types. And it looks different from person to person - you may have an oily T-zone (nose, forehead and / or chin) but dry skin everywhere, or you may be dry and sensitive only in certain concentrated spots, for example around from the eyes or mouth.

How to take care of it:

  • Cleansing: Cleanse twice a day, in the evening night consider a  gel or foaming cleanser. Be sure to wash your face after excessive excersise to avoid unwanted breakouts.

  • Moisturizing:Moisturizing with oil free products are most beneficial for combination skin. Adding a toner can also be beneficial to balancing the PH level.

Exfoliation: Try to exfoliate no more than 2-3 times a week depending on how your skin reacts.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin is most likely dry and flaky. It also burns quickly (in the sun or in the wind), frequently reddened, and irritated by weather changes, chemicals, or even products in general.

How to take care of it:

  • Cleansing: Cleanse once a day, in the evening night focus on natural products when it comes to your cleansing and hydration routine, the least amount of irritants and chemicals the better.
  • Moisturizing:Moisturizing with products specifically designed for sensitive skin is a must, ensure you use one with SPF to avoid sun damage. Patch testing a new formula on the inside of the forearm is a great way to minimize potential reactions on the face. If your skin shows no signs of swelling, apply the formula to the area behind one of your ears before using it on your face.

  • Exfoliation: Try to exfoliate no more than once a fortnight depending on how your skin reacts.
